TRIBULATIONS

JIBSON DESERT DAY 31

Day 264 of the Elephant’s Year

I glanced around the room, seeing a very tired Lejune removing his hands from around my forehead. The bags under his eyes made no sense. Nor did the fact I wore my robes again. The woman who floated over the bed vanished and I peered down into the wooden bathing bowl to see feces, vomit, and an excess of blood.

“You erased the memory?” I asked hesitantly, making a logical conclusion.

“Just as Galifini implanted a memory of pain, I took away three days of torture. For now anyway.” The ominous words sent shivers down my spine. “Trust me, you’re better off this way. No one wants to live through burning off their arm, melting their skull, and… things were grim. You made it, though,” Lejune said with a smile.

A nagging reality tugged at my brain. He was right, Galifini didn’t torture me. That was a trick she managed to alter and add to my memory. I wanted to vomit from the reality of it, but my stomach grumbled hungrily.

“I feel weak,” I said.

“Yes, you will feel this way for a few days. However, you literally changed an overriding force of the universe: decay. You are one of two mages on Thos who can perform such a spell,” Lajune said, gesturing for me to leave the room.

I followed him out to mostly leave the nasty smell. Based on the waiting servants outside the room, he wanted me to see what I went through. While my mind caught up, I realized he said two mages.

“Wait, why me if there’s another?” I asked.

We stopped in the hallway where the guard from before waited. The demon Pargrib carried a covered weapon, and I noticed my sword was not with my other items. Lejune held up a finger to keep me from asking a second question before he could answer the first.

“There is another mage capable of performing this task. She is retired and I tried to bribe her. No matter what I offered, she refused. Decay is not a trivial thing. It exists in everything, including the sun and this very planet we stand on. For all life, there’s death, and I won’t get too preachy here. I will stick to the facts,” Lejune said, pulling us aside.

A team of servants carried out buckets of… me from the animal bathing bin. I pinched my face at the smell. That sloshing noise would haunt me.

Lejune ignored the demon servants and said, “Decay remover is the name of your spell. As you reduced Miranda’s age, your body experienced rot. We cut away the rot and you had to heal the damage. If you rot too much, you die. That is why it took three days and that was why there was so much blood. In order to heal yourself, you had to quickly ingest mana from the gem of a dragon. Yeah… more damage, more blood, more pain.”

“I feel full,” I said.

“You’re a sadist and I think one day I shall fear you,” Pargrib said.
